my serious self at work

the downside of thinking ahead

Yes, this is a rant.

Whoever invented mazes without exit points are loonies. Meetings in Shanghai produced general directions without considering its implications. I am the unofficial dumpsite of comments, suggestions, and questions. I am tasked to redo summaries I have completed months ago. READ people READ! Your planning points are all in my 2008 proposal…

puff the magic dragon

Who measures one’s efficiency in the work place?

When you find yourself surrounded with people who give feedback a week late,
If your mind screams mad at unavoidable issues had you gotten replies earlier,
If lead-time is not equated with ASAP where soon means yesterday,
When one accepts that the word priority is relative.
Who needs shaping up? Who has to ship out?

I hope to find myself in a harbor where learning is mutual.
A boat where the semantics of excellence is defined by Camelot.
Merlin could come in handy, too.

a toneless glee

Eight octaves of corporate blur.
Sharps and flats in synchopated directions.
High-pitched. Wrong Key. Painfully out of tune.
A definite cacophony of indecision.

blues clues…

There’s a spy in the house. Inspector gadget is working on pseudo-espionage reports based on a single incident where default settings are must-keeps and clock-ticking is by nano seconds. The Sherlock Holmes wannabe is not validating historical facts. Even Scooby Doo and Shaggy Rogers are not happy. Oh dear!

@ # ? ” < ! ) : ' * & % $

My 20-20 vision is in danger. The bandits include endless rounds of editing, formatting issues, missing texts, piles of printouts, and countless paper jam. Why do I worry so much about quotation marks and full stops? There must be more to life than periods, brackets, and regular expressions. I miss my Passolo and TeamWorks.

taglines

Company slogans applicable to how I have been living my life:

- Uncomplicate (Cebu)
- Simpler is better (the Fort)
- Challenge for the best (the Lion City)

The last in the list is my current state. I wonder what’s next.

four days a month

I will be spending more time in KL from May until July. Too many things to do within the next few months. Piles of materials to work on. Projects are going crazy by the minute. Good thing that the Singapore office colleagues have now digested the idea that I am not leaving their world sooner than they would want me to. I am staying, all right. Well, at least as long as I manage to come up with my list of elsewhere. Soon. I hope.

oxygen in the black hole

I’ve finally identified my source of stress. It is one thing not to have processes in place. But, it is totally mad to try and plan for change with a mindset that is not customary to improvement. Frustration makes me tired. Here I am documenting every step. Trying to make sense of how each project should run, making trial and error work, knowing how this and that should be managed only by chance. My American and European colleagues must have spoiled me from my previous jobs. The job here is not difficult at all. Yet, my mind fears the eeriness of chaos. I suppose the article I read in one of the local newspapers here is true. This country has first-world infrastructure with a third-world thinking. How do I live with that?

tomb sweeping day

I have my version of this Chinese holiday. I am cleaning other people’s backlog from 2008. Unnecessary pain :(
